Aziz Abdukhakimov, Adviser to the President of Uzbekistan on Environmental Issues and Chair of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, met with Kanokpan Lao-Araya, Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Resident Mission in Uzbekistan. They discussed cooperation on desertification and dust storms, air quality, climate data and monitoring, climate finance, waste management and green technologies.

To improve coordination, the sides proposed appointing focal points, consolidating requests and agreeing on priority areas. ADB has also decided to engage a long-term climate adviser for the National Committee to help coordinate expert, technical and financial support.

Potential areas for ADB technical assistance include Uzbekistan’s Clean Air initiative and a separate project to address desertification and land degradation. The sides agreed to focus on two or three priority initiatives that can be developed into projects with clear timelines, responsible parties and funding sources.

They also discussed continuing the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Project, valued at US$112 million. It aims to modernise the waste management system and expand waste collection services to nearly four million people.

The sides agreed to continue preparing concrete projects, mobilising technical and financial resources, and working toward measurable results.
