24 July 2026 — Uzbekistan has taken another step toward strengthening sustainable agriculture through a seminar dedicated to the institutionalization of the Farmer Field School (FFS) system. The event was organized under the "Sustainable Forest and Pasture Management in Dryland Ecosystems of Uzbekistan" Project (GCP/UZB/020/GFF) with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The seminar brought together stakeholders to review the current status of Farmer Field Schools, discuss the findings of farmers' educational needs assessments, and identify priorities for the further development and institutionalization of the FFS approach across the country.
Participants also examined proposals for field studies in the Jondor District of Bukhara Region and the Nurata District of Navoi Region, as well as opportunities to expand the FFS approach nationwide. Discussions focused on integrating the methodology with business education programmes, sustainable land management practices, Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) objectives, and gender-responsive approaches.
The practical component of the seminar enabled farmers to engage directly with experts and representatives of relevant government institutions, providing an opportunity to exchange experiences and receive practical guidance on sustainable agricultural practices.
As a key outcome of the event, participants agreed to develop a National Roadmap for the Institutionalization of the Farmer Field School System in Uzbekistan, drawing on the findings of the field research conducted in the Jondor and Nurata districts.
The initiative is expected to strengthen sustainable land management, prevent land degradation, enhance farmers' knowledge and practical skills, and support the broader implementation of sustainable agricultural practices throughout Uzbekistan.
