The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (UN). The UN Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco and entered into force on 24 October 1945, establishing an organization dedicated to maintaining international peace and security.
Over the past eight decades, the UN has evolved into a global forum for dialogue and cooperation, bringing together 193 Member States to address issues such as conflict prevention, human rights protection, poverty eradication, climate action and sustainable development.
To commemorate this milestone, the UN has launched the “UN80” initiative, aimed at reimagining the Organization’s mission in today’s rapidly changing world. The initiative focuses on modernizing multilateralism, empowering youth and women, and strengthening global responses to humanitarian and environmental challenges.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the 80th anniversary is both a celebration and a call to action:
“The UN Charter remains our moral and political compass. We must ensure it works for everyone — especially for future generations.”
Commemorative events are being held across the globe, featuring conferences, exhibitions, and public campaigns highlighting the UN’s enduring role in building a more peaceful and sustainable world.
