On April 22 in Astana, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon, took part in the meeting of the Heads of State Council of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS).

In his remarks, the President emphasized that Tajikistan has consistently viewed the Fund as a key mechanism for regional cooperation on water and environmental issues. He noted that environmental crises, including the Aral Sea disaster, require enhanced joint and coordinated action.

It was highlighted that IFAS has become an effective platform for dialogue, enabling the implementation of regional projects in water management and environmental protection and raising global awareness.

President Rahmon outlined major challenges, including glacier melting, ecosystem degradation, and increasing natural disasters, particularly dust storms. He stressed that these issues have a direct impact on public health, agriculture, and water resources.

“Tajikistan, where up to 60% of the region’s river flow is formed, acutely feels the consequences of these challenges,” he stated.

He further noted that population growth, rising water demand, and climate change are placing increasing pressure on water resources, affecting energy, food, and environmental security across Central Asia.

In this context, the President called for prioritizing the effective use of existing cooperation mechanisms, as well as adapting IFAS to modern realities and strengthening its institutional framework.

Among the proposals was the creation of an Interstate Energy Commission of Central Asia within the Fund.

Key priorities also include the introduction of water- and energy-saving technologies, strengthening scientific cooperation, training specialists, and expanding academic exchanges.

President Rahmon also highlighted the upcoming Fourth High-Level International Conference on Water in Dushanbe under the “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028” Decade and invited participants to attend.

He concluded by emphasizing the need for integrated and sustainable water resource management, taking into account emerging challenges and technological advancements.
