On 25 September 2026, Kyrgyz Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision Akyl Toktobaev took part in the high-level event “BBNJ First Movers”, held in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In his remarks, the Minister highlighted the historic significance of the entry into force of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). He stressed that effective implementation requires an inclusive approach and international cooperation.

The Kyrgyz Republic signed the Agreement on 17 July 2025 and ratified it in September 2025. It entered into force for Kyrgyzstan on 17 January 2026.

Although Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country, it regards the protection of the world’s oceans as a shared responsibility of the international community. Oceans, mountains, glaciers, rivers and terrestrial ecosystems are interconnected parts of a single natural system.
