Establishing a Digital Climate Hub and improving greenhouse gas emissions monitoring were key recommendations from the expert dialogue “The Potential of Digital Technologies and AI for Climate Change Adaptation,” held in Kazakhstan.
Participants explored how artificial intelligence could support industrial decarbonization, improve climate data quality and facilitate Kazakhstan’s integration into the global carbon market. The discussions brought together researchers, government officials, nongovernmental organizations, national and international experts, and university students.
The event was organized by the Green Academy Scientific and Educational Center in cooperation with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, with support from the British Embassy, the University of Central Asia and the Caravan of Knowledge Foundation. Opening remarks were delivered by Nurlan Kurmalaev, Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, and Sally Axworthy, British Ambassador to Kazakhstan.
The discussions resulted in recommendations to strengthen digital monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions. Participants also proposed establishing a climate hub at Astana Hub to support projects under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
The dialogue took place ahead of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), to be held in Antalya, Türkiye. More than 80 participants joined the event in person and online.
