Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are deepening their cooperation in the field of environmental protection and climate action, building a solid platform for regional collaboration amid global challenges.

The foundation of this partnership was laid with the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection, signed in 2008 in Baku. Currently, both countries are working on a new intergovernmental agreement that will support a more structured and large-scale implementation of joint environmental initiatives.

In recent years, the two nations have actively participated in international environmental events, including COP28 and COP29, where the first meeting of environment ministers of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) was held in Baku. This resulted in the signing of a Declaration of Intent to strengthen environmental coordination.

Notable developments include Azerbaijan’s participation in the Samarkand Climate Forum, the launch of the Asian Development Bank’s “Glaciers to Farms” regional program worth $3.5 billion, and the hosting of an eco-media forum with an Azerbaijani delegation.

A strong focus is placed on youth engagement and environmental education. In 2023–2024, young eco-activists from Azerbaijan took part in an international environmental camp in Samarkand under the auspices of the Zamin Foundation, with support from UNICEF, UNDP, and FAO.

Future plans include promoting green urbanization, scientific exchange, and establishing a dedicated working group on environmental cooperation. This partnership represents a vital contribution to sustainable development not only for both countries but also for the wider region.
