On 25–26 May, the Republic of Dagestan hosted an international delegation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) as part of the “Journey Along the Great Silk Road” initiative, organized within the framework of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists.

The delegation included representatives from Germany, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, Kyrgyzstan, France and Mongolia. The visit was supported by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Dagestan.

During the visit, participants explored Dagestan’s experience in sustainable rangeland management, livestock development and efforts to combat land degradation. The delegation visited pastures in the Buynaksk District, the full-cycle agricultural enterprise “Kurbanservice,” the agro-tourism project “Peach Orchard,” and a newly opened rice-processing facility in the Tarumovsky District.

Special attention was given to Dagestan’s unique transhumance livestock system, rangeland conservation practices and measures aimed at preventing desertification. Delegates highlighted the region’s strong potential in sustainable agriculture and the responsible use of natural resources.

Following the completion of the Dagestan leg of the program, the UNCCD delegation continued its “Journey Along the Great Silk Road” to Uzbekistan, where participants are expected to explore regional initiatives on sustainable land management, land restoration and rural development.
