Ashgabat, November 3, 2025 — A validation workshop was held to review the proposed model and draft roadmap for an improved monitoring system in the agriculture, forestry, and other land-use (AFOLU) sectors of Turkmenistan.

The event took place within the framework of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) programme “Integrated Land Use Considering Climate Change in Central Asia” and brought together representatives of government bodies, research institutes, national experts, and interagency commissions.

The main objective of the meeting was to enhance the monitoring of land and natural resources, introduce innovative observation methods, and promote a systematic approach to sustainable land use that takes climate factors into account.

Gulnara Mergenova, National Coordinator of the GIZ Programme in Turkmenistan, noted that the development of the roadmap is based on an analysis of the current state of natural resources and the identification of priority areas for development. The final document will outline objectives, tasks, responsible entities, and implementation timelines.

During the discussions, special attention was given to monitoring agrobiodiversity, managing forest ecosystems, ensuring the sustainable use of pastures, and digitalizing land resource accounting. Experts emphasized the need to strengthen human capacity, introduce GIS technologies, improve the regulatory framework, and enhance the role of research institutions in managing natural ecosystems.

As a result of the workshop, refined proposals were developed for integrating innovative solutions into the national monitoring system and preparing the roadmap, which will ensure more effective management of land, water, and forest resources under climate change conditions.
