The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) has adopted the resolution “On the Conservation of Glaciers and the Cryosphere”, jointly initiated by the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Peru. The resolution was adopted on 12 December at the conclusion of the seventh session of the Assembly, held at the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
The resolution calls on UN Member States and development partners to intensify urgent actions to conserve glaciers, strengthen efforts to address climate change, enhance international cooperation, improve resilience to environmental risks, and mobilize financial resources to support glacier and cryosphere protection initiatives.
The document also officially welcomes the International High-Level Conference on Glacier Preservation, held in Dushanbe in May 2025, and recognizes its key outcomes, including the Dushanbe Declaration on Glaciers and the Dushanbe Call for Glacier Preservation, as important contributions to global climate and water discussions.
The adoption of the resolution by acclamation during the 7th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly underscores the international community’s recognition of Tajikistan’s leadership in advancing the global agenda on water resources, climate action, and glacier conservation.
The United Nations Environment Assembly is widely recognized as the highest global decision-making body on environmental matters, which further elevates the significance of the adopted resolution.
Notably, this resolution represents the first and, to date, the only UNEA resolution initiated by a Central Asian country, highlighting Tajikistan’s unique role in bringing regional environmental priorities to the global stage.
