Tajikistan and China continue to expand cooperation in environmental protection, water resource management and green energy development. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, in an interview with Xinhua News Agency on the sidelines of the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018–2028).
According to the Minister, an important milestone in bilateral relations was the state visit of President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to China in May this year. The visit resulted in the signing of a Joint Statement on Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation and Partnership in the New Era, reflecting a new stage in relations between the two countries.
Among the key areas of cooperation, the Minister highlighted joint initiatives between the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aimed at glacier preservation, biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of water resources. The two countries are also strengthening collaboration in renewable energy, including solar and wind power technologies, energy storage systems and other green energy solutions.
Particular attention is being given to the development of modern monitoring and early warning systems for natural disasters, as well as the use of satellite technologies for meteorological data analysis. China will also provide technical support to Tajikistan in monitoring glacier melt through advanced remote sensing technologies.
The Minister emphasized that glacier preservation remains one of Tajikistan’s key priorities in its climate policy agenda. Accelerated glacier melting caused by climate change poses significant challenges to water, energy and food security across Central Asia.
According to Mr. Muhriddin, addressing water and climate challenges requires stronger international cooperation, greater access to financial and technological resources, and the implementation of practical joint initiatives. Tajikistan remains committed to supporting international mechanisms that promote climate and water-related projects, including initiatives focused on glacier preservation.
