A New Map of Nature: SIC ICSD Applies GIS for Biodiversity Conservation in Central Asia

Ashgabat

Ashgabat, May 22, 2025 — The Scientific Information Center of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (SIC ICSD) presented innovative approaches to the management of protected areas (PAs) during a roundtable in Ashgabat, organized within the framework of the UNDP/GEF project with the participation of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. More than 20 participants, including representatives of ministries, nature reserves, and international organizations, discussed the results of biodiversity monitoring and ways to improve environmental legislation. SIC ICSD showcased the outcomes of applying GIS technologies for the mapping of ornithological and botanical sites, analysis of habitats of rare species, and identification of ecological corridors critical for wildlife migration. The legal aspects of managing buffer zones of protected areas under climate risk conditions were also discussed, along with the need to align national legislation with global frameworks, including the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework of the CBD. A regional review of eco-corridor development practices and the role of international partners, including CAREC, was also presented. These approaches are reflected in the Regional Environmental Programme for Central Asia. The meeting highlighted the expert role of SIC ICSD in promoting sustainable nature management and regional cooperation.
