On November 10, 2025, the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) opened in Belém, Brazil, gathering around 50,000 delegates from 190 countries.
The delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic participated in the official opening ceremony, led by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers E.Zh. Baisalov and Special Representative of the President for the Implementation of the Five-Year Action Plan for the Development of Mountain Regions D.A. Kemelova.
Kyrgyzstan remains a strong advocate for the rights and interests of mountain communities, and its participation in this major climate forum aims to draw international attention to the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems to climate change. Mountain regions in Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan, face accelerated glacier melting, increasing landslide risks, changes in hydrological regimes, and threats to food and water security.
During preliminary consultations with the COP30 Chair and participants, the Kyrgyz delegation reached an agreement on holding multilateral consultations on the “mountain agenda” under the Brazilian Presidency. This format will allow countries and international organizations to discuss measures for strengthening adaptation and resilience of mountain communities and preserving mountain ecosystems.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Kyrgyz delegation held a meeting with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, discussing expanded access for mountain countries to climate financing, including mechanisms of the Green Climate Fund. The delegation also proposed the creation of a Global Mountain Resilience Center in Bishkek, an international platform for scientific collaboration, data exchange, and coordination of climate adaptation efforts in mountain regions.
In the coming days, the Kyrgyz delegation will continue participating in negotiations, promoting issues of mountain region adaptation, sustainable development, water security, and expanding international support for high-altitude countries.
