Ashgabat, February 17–18, 2026. A specialized training session on the application of the SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) system was held at the Conference Hall of the Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan for staff members of the Kopetdag State Nature Reserve and the Ahal Velayat Department of Environmental Protection.
The training was organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan in cooperation with Conservation X Labs and local SMART experts. The initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness of protected area inspections and biodiversity monitoring.
The first day focused on theoretical instruction and practical exercises. Participants studied the operational principles of SMART — an internationally recognized standard for conservation monitoring and patrol management. The afternoon included a simulated field exercise, during which inspectors practiced recording incidents via smartphones, including detecting animal tracks, checking camera traps, documenting wildlife sightings, and registering environmental violations.
Special emphasis was placed on accurate GPS tagging, real-time photographic documentation, and strategic route planning to prioritize high-risk areas.
The second day (February 18) was dedicated to training SMART system operators. Participants learned how to import patrol routes and observations, manage databases, conduct analytical assessments, and generate reports.
A representative of the Ministry highlighted the strategic importance of digital tools in fulfilling national biodiversity conservation objectives. Conservation X Labs provided the necessary equipment to support effective SMART-based inspections.
The introduction of SMART technology aligns with the country’s broader digitalization strategy, modernization of infrastructure, and implementation of advanced technological solutions in public administration. The integration of digital systems into conservation practices contributes to building a modern, technology-driven, and data-oriented environmental protection framework.
As a result, the operations of the Kopetdag Nature Reserve and the Ahal Velayat Environmental Protection Department are transitioning to a new level of transparency, accountability, and conservation effectiveness.
