International Conference on Glacier Preservation Opens in Dushanbe: Tajikistan Puts the Cryosphere at the Center of the Global Climate Agenda

International Conference

May 29, 2025, Dushanbe — The High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation has officially opened in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. This major gathering brings together government officials, representatives of international organizations, the scientific community, environmental activists, and experts from around the world. The conference marks a milestone event within the framework of the United Nations-designated International Year of Glacier Preservation and the launch of the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Science (2025–2034) — both initiatives spearheaded by the Republic of Tajikistan.

Against the backdrop of mounting global concern over the accelerating retreat of glaciers due to climate change, the conference underscores the critical role of the cryosphere in ensuring water security, promoting sustainable development, and reducing disaster risks. Over the course of several days, participants will explore collective responses to climate threats through a rich program that includes eight thematic forums, 18 side events, 12 sessions, as well as a festival and an exhibition.

The central goal of the forum is to unite the efforts of governments, scientists, civil society, and international institutions to develop coordinated policies and implement science-based solutions.

For Tajikistan, home to a significant number of glaciers that are strategically vital for regional water supply and hydropower, the conference holds particular importance. The final declaration, expected at the close of the event, will serve as a political call to action, urging the global community to undertake urgent and coordinated measures to protect glaciers and promote sustainable water resource management.
