Global Land Agenda in Focus: CRIC 23 Set to Convene in Panama

The twenty-third session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 23) under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will take place 1–5 December 2025 in Panama City, Panama. Delegates from 196 countries and the European Union will convene to assess global progress in combating desertification, land degradation, and drought, as parties to the world’s only legally binding treaty on these issues.

Around 500 participants representing governments, academia and civil society are expected at the venue located at Calle General Juan D. Perón, Amador, Panama City. CRIC 23 will deliver recommendations on achieving global targets to prevent and reverse land degradation and strengthen drought resilience by 2030, discuss the post-2030 strategic agenda, and convene key stakeholder groups, including women, youth, Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Panama, a Party to the Convention since 1996, has committed to achieving Land Degradation Neutrality by 2030, identified 31 priority hotspots, and is advancing reforestation efforts and Dry Corridor adaptation programmes. Its national Nature Pledge brings together commitments across land, climate and biodiversity, advancing ecosystem restoration, sustainable land management and land-based climate solutions.

On 30 November 2025, consultations of affected country Parties from the Regional Implementation Annexes for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Northern Mediterranean, and Central and Eastern Europe will be held at the Panama Convention Center ahead of CRIC 23.
