The Republic of Tajikistan continues systematic efforts to restore degraded lands and increase forest cover. From 9 to 16 February 2026, under the “Resilient Landscape Restoration” project (RESILAND Tajikistan), 56,620 seedlings were supplied and reforestation activities were organized in the target districts.

The activities covered Kabadiyan, Shahritus, and Nosiri Khusrav districts of Khatlon region, where soil erosion, pasture degradation, and reduction of woody vegetation have been observed over recent decades. Planting will take place on 113 hectares of state forest fund land.

The selected species have both ecological and economic value:
• Paulownia — 16,660 seedlings;
• Local pistachio — 39,960 seedlings;
• Elm — one-year-old seedlings selected and additionally sorted.

Species selection was based on their ability to stabilize soils, adapt to arid climates, and generate long-term economic benefits.

Special attention was given to quality control of planting material, including plant height, stem thickness, root system condition, and compliance with agrotechnical standards.

Joint forest management groups play a key role in implementation, participating in planting, maintenance, and monitoring. Under the cooperation mechanism, local residents receive 70% of the harvest, while 30% remains with forestry enterprises.

The project is part of the World Bank’s RESILAND CA+ regional program implemented across Central Asia. The regional component in Tajikistan is implemented by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
