The fifth meeting of the Regional Working Group on the implementation of the Regional Climate Adaptation Strategy for Central Asia took place on 27–28 November in Dushanbe. The event brought together representatives of relevant ministries and agencies from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, as well as international organizations, development partners and regional institutions.
In his opening remarks, Sunnatullo Pirov, Deputy Director of the Agency for Hydrometeorology under the Committee for Environmental Protection, emphasized the significance of the regional strategy as a major step forward for enhancing climate cooperation in Central Asia. He highlighted that the Strategy focuses on strengthening regional coordination and sustainable cooperation mechanisms, advancing the development and implementation of adaptation projects with financing opportunities such as the Green Climate Fund, enhancing knowledge exchange and scientific collaboration, and expanding systems for climate monitoring, data sharing and forecasting.
Established in 2024 under the GIZ “Green Central Asia” Programme, the Regional Working Group has previously convened in Almaty, Tashkent, Bishkek and Ashgabat. The Dushanbe meeting centered on reviewing the progress of the Strategy for 2024–2025, discussing the draft implementation plan, considering country proposals regarding the future of the Secretariat and examining financing opportunities to support the Strategy’s action plan. Development partners also shared updates on regional projects contributing to climate resilience.
Participants reaffirmed the importance of strengthened regional cooperation and joint efforts to enhance climate adaptation capacities across Central Asia.
