Nearly 100 million hectares of land in Russia are affected by degradation and desertification, including about 47% of agricultural land across 35 regions that produce up to 70% of the country’s agricultural output. In Kalmykia, the first man-made desert has already appeared.

In an interview with Agroexpert, Lyudmila Orlova, President of the National Movement for Conservation Agriculture, stressed that a comprehensive approach is needed to preserve soil resources. According to her, this should include the introduction of precision farming technologies, the use of biological products, the creation of shelterbelts, and measures to protect rivers and other water bodies.

She also emphasized that soil health is an integral part of the FAO’s “One Health” concept, which considers the interconnection between human health, soil, plants, animals, and the environment.

These issues will be the focus of the innovation session “Soil in the Spotlight: Modern Solutions for Regenerative Agriculture”, which Orlova will lead as part of the business program of the 1st International Exhibition of Innovations and High Technologies for the Agro-Industrial Complex (iAGRI), to be held in Moscow on January 21–23, 2026.
