Kazakhstan has established a new regional state nature park “Merke” in the Zhambyl region, covering more than 86,000 hectares of the foothill and mountain ecosystems of the Western Tien Shan.

The park plays a key role in the conservation of biodiversity, including rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. According to the latest census, the area is home to 8 snow leopards, 120 argali, 20 Indian porcupines, and 22 Turkestan lynxes.

The creation of the “Merke” park represents an important step for Kazakhstan in protecting ecosystems, managing water resources sustainably, and preserving the cultural heritage of the region. Beyond conservation, the park is expected to open new opportunities for ecotourism, environmental education, and inclusive community engagement.

Future development plans include the establishment of infrastructure, the creation of new jobs, the promotion of scientific research, and stronger cooperation with local communities.

The park continues the joint efforts of the Government of Kazakhstan and UNDP, which have resulted in the establishment and expansion of protected areas, national parks, and ecological corridors that safeguard the migration routes of rare species.

With its establishment, the “Merke” park strengthens Kazakhstan’s protected area system and contributes to achieving global biodiversity and climate goals.
