On 18 November 2025, in Belém, Brazil, during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-30), a high-level event organized by the Republic of Tajikistan and the High-Level Group “Glacier Melt Ambitions” (AMI) focused on the accelerating loss of the global cryosphere.

The event was opened by COP-29 Chair Mukhtar Babaev (Azerbaijan) and Iceland’s Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Johann Pall Johansson, emphasizing that preserving glaciers and snow cover is critical for water security, coastal protection, and preventing climate hazards.

Leading scientists presented latest data showing that cryosphere melt is occurring faster than expected, exceeding adaptation thresholds in many regions.

During a roundtable, ministers and representatives from Chile, Monaco, Fiji, Nepal, Liberia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Georgia, and the Asian Development Bank shared experiences in glacier preservation, sea level rise mitigation, and risk management.

Participants stressed the need to integrate cryosphere issues into national adaptation strategies, expand monitoring, early warning systems, and provide financial support to the most vulnerable countries. Special recognition was given to the Republic of Tajikistan’s contribution within the International Year of Glaciers 2025, which draws global attention to rapid glacier loss.

The event concluded with a call for heightened global climate ambition without resorting to risky geoengineering methods, to avoid irreversible tipping points in glaciers, ice sheets, and ocean currents.
