Astana, April 22–24, 2026. The Regional Environmental Summit (RES 2026) will take place in Kazakhstan’s capital as a major international platform aimed at consolidating efforts among Central Asian countries and partner states in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
The summit seeks to promote coordinated approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation, water resource degradation, and sustainable natural resource management. The initiative to convene RES 2026 in partnership with the United Nations was announced by the Head of State during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023.
Approximately 1,500 delegates are expected to attend, including representatives of governments, international organizations, academia, and the private sector.
A key focus of the agenda will be the advancement of climate-adaptive land use practices. Land degradation remains one of the most significant environmental threats in Central Asia, directly affecting food security and ecosystem resilience.
The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in cooperation with JSC “Zhasyl Damu” and the State Enterprise “GIPROZem,” plans to host a dedicated panel session aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in combating land degradation, restoring soil fertility, and advancing carbon farming initiatives.
The exchange of regional expertise is expected to facilitate the development of harmonized land management approaches, promote best practices, and reinforce Kazakhstan’s role as a regional hub for climate resilience.
During the summit, a Joint Statement by the governmental authorities of Central Asian countries is expected to be adopted, addressing land degradation mitigation, soil restoration, and the development of carbon agriculture.
The draft Joint Statement has been prepared by the Committee for Land Resources Management under the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan and will soon be circulated among Central Asian countries for consideration. The document is expected to serve as an institutional foundation for coordinated regional action and joint implementation mechanisms.
