China and Central Asian countries have reported tangible progress in cooperation on combating desertification following a working visit by a delegation of the China–Central Asia Cooperation Center to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
During the visit, the Chinese delegation held high-level consultations with relevant government agencies in the four countries. Discussions focused on practical solutions for preventing land degradation, protecting forest areas from wildfires, and managing saline and alkaline soils. Special attention was given to the experience of China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, which has demonstrated effective models for restoring degraded land while fostering environmentally sustainable industries.
The delegation also carried out field studies at several ecological demonstration sites across the region and provided technical recommendations tailored to local environmental and climatic conditions. In addition, the parties explored opportunities for cooperation in breeding salt-tolerant plant varieties, developing smart greenhouse systems, and strengthening professional capacity building.
As a result of the visits, China confirmed its readiness to launch demonstration projects in Central Asia in the fields of afforestation, soil rehabilitation, and smart agro-ecological production. The Cooperation Center will continue to promote long-term partnership mechanisms, facilitate the transfer of adapted technologies, and build an expert platform aimed at enhancing regional environmental security and advancing green development.
