On 15 November 2025, a COP30 side event titled “Climate-Induced Migration and Green Skills Development in Central Asia: Pathways Toward the Regional Environmental Summit 2026” was held, organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Participants noted the region’s increasing vulnerability to climate impacts, including land degradation, intensifying droughts and rapid glacier melt, all of which contribute to the rise of climate-induced migration across Central Asia. The discussion emphasized the urgent need to strengthen green skills development and support labour market adaptation in line with the green transition.
Speakers also stressed the importance of inclusive approaches, ensuring that the needs of youth and women—groups disproportionately affected by climate and socioeconomic pressures—are fully integrated into policy planning.
The event reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s active preparations for the upcoming Regional Environmental Summit 2026 in Astana, set to become a key platform for advancing coordinated climate action in the region.
