71st Global Environment Facility Council Meeting Opens in Samarkand
01/06/2026
The official program of the 71st Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council Meeting has commenced in Samarkand ahead of the Eighth GEF Assembly. The international forum has brought together representatives of GEF member countries, international organizations, financial institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector to discuss priorities for the global environmental agenda.
The first day of the meeting focused on the new GEF-9 replenishment cycle for 2026–2030. Participants reviewed funding priorities, resource allocation mechanisms and opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of environmental investments. Particular attention was given to supporting countries most vulnerable to climate change, including least developed countries and small island developing states.
One of the key outcomes of the discussions was the review of the ninth replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund. Delegates noted that the initial funding envelope for GEF-9 will amount to USD 3.9 billion, with additional donor contributions expected before final approval.
The Council also approved the June 2026 work program, which includes 16 environmental projects across 19 countries with a total GEF investment of USD 141.4 million. These projects are expected to mobilize more than USD 828 million in co-financing, significantly increasing the impact of environmental initiatives worldwide. The Uzbekistan Risk Mitigation Facility was highlighted as a successful example of blended finance supporting sustainable development goals.
During the discussions, participants emphasized the importance of strengthening transboundary cooperation, engaging the private sector in environmental action and promoting science-based solutions to address global environmental challenges. Climate change, plastic pollution, biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management were among the key topics addressed.
The GEF Council Meeting will continue in Samarkand through 3 June, followed by the official opening of the Eighth GEF Assembly on 4 June. The Assembly is expected to serve as a major international platform for advancing global cooperation on environmental protection and sustainable development.
