The 29th Conference of the Partie

From 11 to 22 November 2024, the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, became the center of global climate diplomacy, hosting the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The largest climate summit of the year brought together representatives from nearly 200 countries, as well as leaders of international organizations, scientists, businessmen and representatives of civil society.

Key topics and solutions

COP29 in Baku became an important milestone in the implementation of the Paris Agreement aimed at curbing global warming. One of the main issues on the agenda was the need to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to the effects of climate change. As expected, the focus was on the financing of climate initiatives, including support for developing countries in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Agreements were reached on increasing the transparency of climate financing and the mechanism for distributing funds for countries most vulnerable to climate change. Particular attention was paid to the role of the energy sector, given that Azerbaijan is one of the world's largest exporters of oil and gas. The conference discussed the prospects for a gradual transition to renewable energy sources, as well as measures to reduce emissions in the oil and gas industry.

Results and Next Steps

Following COP29, countries reaffirmed their commitment to the goals of the Paris Agreement and agreed to step up efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. However, the global community still faces challenges that require immediate action, including increasing climate finance and fulfilling the commitments made. and COP29 was an important step towards a more sustainable future, but key decisions and their implementation will be determined at subsequent climate summits.
