Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is approaching its final stage. At a meeting with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Saida Mirziyoyeva discussed the remaining steps and cooperation with the Organization, stressing the importance of maintaining momentum and completing the process.
Integration into the global trading system could improve Uzbekistan’s access to modern technologies, investment and environmental services. These include solutions for renewable energy, energy efficiency, emissions control, environmental monitoring, water conservation and waste recycling.
Adopting such technologies could help businesses modernize production, use water and energy more efficiently, and reduce their environmental impact. Meeting international product quality and safety requirements could also strengthen the competitiveness of Uzbek producers.
However, WTO accession alone will not automatically resolve environmental challenges. Progress will depend on national standards, effective enforcement, investment in modernization and businesses’ willingness to adopt greener solutions.
