The UNCCD Interregional Group “Central Asia – Russia” Holds In-Person Meeting in Almaty

Almaty, October 2–3, 2025. The UNCCD Interregional Group “Central Asia – Russia” held its in-person meeting at the UN House in Almaty, Kazakhstan, bringing together representatives from Central Asian countries, Russia, and international development partners.

The sessions focused on the implementation of the Interregional Group’s Roadmap, revision of the Joint Action Plan, and preparations for upcoming UNCCD events — the CRIC (Panama, December 2025) and COP17 (Mongolia, August 2026).

Participants included representatives of FAO Kazakhstan, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS), UNEP, and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), among other international and regional organizations.

Discussions centered on regional projects, including the Regional Land Outlook for Central Asia and the Methodological Guide on Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), highlighting the importance of data sharing, scientific collaboration, and regional partnerships to strengthen land resilience.

The agenda also featured field visits to key national institutions such as Giprozem and GISKhAGI, showcasing Kazakhstan’s expertise in land management and geospatial research.

The meeting concluded with a joint session with CAREC and an informal exchange of ideas on future cooperation and project development.
