The Seventh Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Tehran Convention — the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea — was held in Tehran. Kazakhstan was represented by a delegation that included officials from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The session took place in the year marking the 20th anniversary of the Convention’s entry into force. Over the past two decades, it has served as a platform for Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Turkmenistan to cooperate on protecting the Caspian Sea’s marine environment.
Participants discussed key environmental challenges in the region, including the declining level of the Caspian Sea, the conservation of its ecosystems and biodiversity, environmental monitoring, and data exchange. The Ministerial Statement and COP7 decisions were adopted at the meeting.
The Ministerial Statement reflects an initiative by Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to develop an Intergovernmental Programme for the Conservation of the Caspian Sea’s Water Resources. The programme is intended to unite the efforts of the Caspian littoral states and support a comprehensive approach to protecting the sea’s water resources and ecosystems.
The documents adopted at COP7 provide a basis for further regional cooperation and the development of joint practical measures to conserve the Caspian Sea.
