From Climate Technologies to Investment: Kazakhstan Explores New Projects with UNEP and UNIDO

More than $4 million could be allocated to planned climate projects in Kazakhstan. Financing opportunities and the deployment of climate technologies were discussed during meetings between Saken Kalkamanov, Chairman of the Management Board of the International Green Technologies and Investment Projects Center (IGTIC), and representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) during Baku Climate Action Week.

Discussions with UNEP experts focused on the results of the Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) project, implemented by IGTIC in cooperation with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Work is currently underway on its final component, the Technology Action Plan.

Another priority was reducing methane emissions in agriculture, particularly in livestock production. IGTIC and the Climate Change Coordination Center previously submitted a grant application for a project under the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). The parties also explored opportunities for forest-based climate projects under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The meeting with a UNIDO expert focused on establishing a national climate investment platform with support from the Green Climate Fund under the Readiness III programme. UNIDO expressed its willingness to provide technical assistance to help make the platform operational, with the prospect of continued cooperation under Readiness IV.

The platform is intended to coordinate climate investments nationwide and lay the groundwork for sharing experience with other Central Asian countries through a regional green acceleration hub. The initiative will build on the GCIP project, which IGTIC and UNIDO have been working on together for the past three years.
