Uzbekistan Strengthens International Environmental Cooperation at Eco Expo Central Asia 2026

As part of Eco Expo Central Asia 2026, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Environmental Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change Aziz Abdukhakimov held a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of international organizations and environmental institutions to discuss sustainable development, climate resilience and green innovation.

One of the key meetings was held with Grethel Aguilar, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The parties discussed expanding cooperation in biodiversity conservation, promoting Nature-based Solutions, improving the management of protected areas and preparing joint initiatives under the new GEF-9 funding cycle. Particular attention was given to the development of Uzbekistan’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the advancement of Green University as a regional platform for environmental education and research.

During talks with Fatou Haidara, Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of the Directorate of Global Partnerships and External Relations at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), discussions focused on green industrialization, the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and industrial modernization. The parties also explored opportunities for climate innovation, the implementation of Best Available Technologies (BAT) and projects aimed at strengthening climate resilience in Uzbekistan.

Another important meeting took place with Dr. Ian Miller, Director of Science and Innovation at the National Geographic Society. Discussions focused on promoting the natural heritage of Uzbekistan and Central Asia internationally, expanding scientific research cooperation, environmental education and the development of documentary and digital media projects highlighting the region’s unique ecosystems, including the Aral Sea area.

A meeting was also held with Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, President of the Environment Authority of Oman. The parties discussed cooperation in combating desertification, sustainable water resource management, biodiversity conservation and environmental research. Both sides expressed interest in developing joint scientific and educational initiatives.

The meetings highlighted Uzbekistan’s growing role as a regional platform for environmental diplomacy and international cooperation in the fields of sustainable development, the green economy and climate action.
